Are you Transferring this year?

If you are planning to transfer to a four year school there are a number of things you need to keep in mind:

First: Do you know the deadlines for Spring transfer? Fall transfer?

Second; Have you met with the tranfer counselor at the four year school and had your unofficial transcript evaluated?

Third: Have you filled out your graduation application for CVCC?

Fourth: Do you meet guaranteed admission requirements at the four year school and have you checked on that to be sure? The General Studies degree is not accepted for guaranteed admissions by many schools.

Fifth: Be aware that if your GPA is high enough you may be eligible for the transfer scholarship sponsored by the state. If you have applied for graduation this will be noted on your transcript.

Last but not least, don't guess, don't assume, don't depend on what "they" say; meet with a CVCC counselor during spring/summer registration and have a degree check done and a comparison to the four year school.

Transferring in Two Years

Folks, the reason we publish a college catalog with curriculum's inside is because those people who want to transfer in two calendar years need to understand what it is going to take for them to make that happen.

If a curriculum says you need to take a minimum of 14-15 credits a semester then taking the bare minimum of 12 credits so you will be full time is not going to get you graduated with you expect.

And if you know what you want to major in at the four year school, you need to start working with that school at least your second semester here...we are not experts on what a four year school expects for each and every program they offer.

YOU must start to take responsibility for your education.

Are YOU Planning Ahead?

A lot of students come to CVCC with the idea of getting their general education courses out of the way so they can transfer to a "real" college.

Well, CVCC is a real college and your academic performance here may well determine whether or not you WILL be able to transfer.

If you are planning to transfer to a four year school there are a number of things you need to keep in mind:

First and foremost- transferring is a process not something that you think about when you are done here. If you wait until the end of your academic career her to think about this issue, you may end up missing credits that are pre-requisites for the program you want to get into. Or, you may have taken classes that were easy but don't transfer at all.

Second; Feet on the ground! Just because your best friend likes a certain college that doesn't mean it is the right place for you. Does this school even have the program you want? You need to know.

Third: Once you do know that the school has the program you want, it is important to work both with a CVCC counselor and the transfer counselor at the four-year school to make sure you take the courses here that will help you the most at your transfer institution.

Fourth: You need to be aware of all the guaranteed admissions agreements AND that they are all NOT the same. READ THEM!

Fifth: Be aware that if your GPA is high enough you may be eligible for the transfer scholarship sponsored by the state. Your final transcript, the one that says you graduated will have a notation to that effect on it. Be sure to bring that to the attention of the financial aid people at the four year school.

And Sixth: Remember that graduation is not automatic. You must fill out an application for graduation telling the school that you plan to graduate in a particular semester so they can evaluate your transcript to make sure you aren't missing something.

Last but not least, don't guess, don't assume, don't depend on what "they" say; come ask a counselor.

Guaranteed Admissions and General Education

Anynomous asked: "would a general education degree work for the guaranteed admissions agreement for the uva school of engineering i dont have some of the classes in section 2"

The General Studies Degree at CVCC is not yet SCHEV approved and therefore does not come under the Guaranteed Admissions program.

If you are looking at UVA for Engineering, you should be in the CVCC transfer Engineering program. If you are missing some of the classes, you will not fall under the agreement. I would suggest you check with UVA and review your options.
